As a little girl growing up in Norman, we would pass the newly opened restaurant called The Mont all the time. I could see the glow of lights coming through the stained glass windows and wanted to go inside. My mother would tell me, decent people don’t go there, so my hopes of visiting were dashed. Later as a student at OU in the early 1990’s, I still wanted to go but it seemed like a party place. Even though it had that reputation, I also knew members of the Norman police department gathered there every Saturday to drink. I really then just forgot about it until recently with my own daughter a student at OU. Finally, back in December we stopped, it was so good I wish I had gone earlier.
The architecture of the building is what gets your attention first, a low Spanish style building with lots of stained-glass windows. A patio out front gives diners a chance to enjoy the nice weather, or you can enter through a medieval looking wooden door to the main dining room. Their menu ranges from burgers and sandwiches to Tex-Mex. We ordered a couple of things to start with, the fried cheese and fried mushrooms. They were both good. I got the Mont burger with bacon and cheese. Not a bad burger, had a great taste with lots of fresh veggies. Mae got a French dip with a side of mac and cheese (of course). She loved the sandwich but the baked mac and cheese really won her over. A melty cheese top with creamy cheese inside, I had a bite and it was really good. Big K had the green Chile burrito that comes with beans, rice and chips. He really loved the burrito, lots of queso over it. He said the beans and rice were good. I had a couple of the chips, they were light and crispy. Now it was the afternoon, so I didn’t try the famous Sooner Swirl but I will.
The Mont has been a staple in Norman since it opened on Halloween of 1976. The building is much older, of course. The first business I found mentioned is the Monterrey Restaurant. This operated from 1943- 1969. A German restaurant called Volkstube occupied the building for a short time then Hacienda Hernandez took over in 1972. This restaurant survived for a couple of years before turning into Joe’s Bar & Grill which only lasted a year. After all these years the Mont is the place to see and be seen. I’ve heard all the drunk stories from friends who had a few too many while enjoying the atmosphere. I’m sure it does still get crazy on game days but it was quiet while we were there. I would like to go again now that the weather is nice, just to enjoy the good food outdoors. So if you are in Norman, give this legendary restaurant a try. I give them 5 strips of bacon.
In the Oklahoma City metro there are some restaurants that are locally owned and have been part of the scene for many years. Interurban is a perfect example, they have been here since 1976 and still serve up good food.
I have had the opportunity to visit a couple of locations recently and both times the food has been excellent. Both visits I had the chicken fried steak. A nice size steak, breaded with cream gravy poured over it. The steak itself is fork tender and the breading was fried to a crisp brown. The mashed potatoes had a slight hint of garlic, which was different and the okra was also fried to a golden perfection. We started with the cracker-breaded mozzarella sticks, which were deep fried perfectly- crisp on the outside and melty inside. Big K had the flamethrower burger which he said was flavorful but not overly spicy.
I have had many other menu items over the past 40+ years that I have been going to Interurban. My first burger from there was not long after it opened at their original location in downtown Norman. I was maybe 5 or 6 and my grandfather picked up some burgers for dinner. I had only really eaten McDonald’s burgers or homemade ones to that point and can honestly say that burger was the best thing my young mouth had ever eaten. I think that I have spent the rest of my life trying to recreate that experience when I eat out. Now they are called Interurban because they got their start in the building that had been an interurban station built in 1917 for the trolley lines that went from Oklahoma City to Norman. After 1947 when the interurban lines shut down it was converted to a bus station. The restaurant was opened in 1976 and later moved to a location closer to I-35 in the 1990’s.

After an emergency trip to Norman last Friday night, we decided to make our second visit to a new burger place just a few blocks from the University of Oklahoma campus. The 405 Burger Bar has been open about a year after the owners remodeled an old service station at the corner of George and Stinson Streets in SE Norman.
It was around 8p but there was still seating available. We ordered quickly and sat where we had a good view of the bar, which has four televisions set up for sports viewing. Three of the televisions had the NCAA basketball tournament on them, the fourth had OU Women’s softball (they won again, no surprise), so there was always something to watch. We got an order of fried cheese bites to start dinner. The fried cheese bites are fried to a golden perfection served with a tangy ranch for dipping. I got the breakfast burger again, complete with hashbrowns and an egg on top. This burger was huge, the meat was flavorful. As hungry as I was, it was almost too big. My husband tried the Fry Daddy, he liked it. Lots of French fries piled on top of a well-cooked cheeseburger. This was our second trip to 405, we stopped a couple of months ago and had the same good experience. On that trip we got the loaded tots to start. Golden fried tots with cheese melted on top with bacon bits. Also served with ranch, good for a starter or a side. Even though I got the same breakfast burger, Big K got a sidewinder. He said he liked the spicy but it wasn’t overwhelming.
The service was great, the person who took our order was friendly and he was the same person who was busting his rear bringing food to people. My only complaint was that the water cups were too small but other than that I’ll be back and since it’s so close to campus it will be a short drive. I give it 5 strips of bacon.
