Food Friday: China King

I love a good Chinese buffet. Hunan Wok in NW Oklahoma City has been my go to for almost 30 years. There are a few that have gone that I loved and a couple still around that I enjoy. One I hadn’t tried yet is China King on North Penn near Memorial, so on a Friday night we decided to check it out.

Located just in front of the Walmart, the parking lot wasn’t very full so maybe a red flag but we’ll see. We were seated immediately but there were very few diners. The buffets were full of steaming food, so we tackled them. The had so many of my favorites- General Tso’s chicken, seafood casserole, sweet and sour chicken, fried shrimp, egg rolls, crab rangoon. I liked most of it. The chicken was a bit dry, even the gooey General was tough. The seafood casserole needed something, just couldn’t place what it was. Even the crab rangoon was a bit flavorless.

Now the service was incredible and friendly. The restaurant was clean. I feel like if they improve the food, they might get more business. So I’m going to give them 3 strips of bacon, just for the service.

Food Friday: Blue Moon Chinese Restaurant

I have been by Blue Moon Chinese Restaurant at least a thousand times over the years but never stopped. Once again another place I should have tried earlier. This isn’t a Chinese buffet (which I do love the buffets), this is a real sit-down family style restaurant.

The atmosphere from the time you walk in is different, immediately hit with a calm. It was a casual environment, very laid back. Plus the decorations in the building were beautiful and calming as well. We had to start the order with their famous egg rolls. We had both heard about the egg rolls and the fact they have won best egg roll in the metro area several times. Truthfully they lived up to their reputation. Full of cabbage and pork, really good. We also tried their crab rangoons. These were also good. Loved the crisp with the creamy crab cream cheese filling. For my entree, I got the butterfly shrimp. These are shrimp, wrapped in bacon and deep fried in a tempura batter. They were huge and tasted wonderful. I actually had to bring some home because they were just so big. Surprisingly, they reheated nicely as well. Big K got the Cantonese chicken. This is cut up chicken with carrots and onion. He really loved it and cleaned his plate. The also brought out fried rice served family style. This fried rice was so good. I could have eaten it all by myself. It was perfect. Family style in Chinese food means it’s for everyone at the table to share.

I wish I would have tried this place much earlier, it is now in my rotation of favorites. I give them 5 strips of bacon.

Food Friday: Hibachi Supreme Buffet

So last weekend was the Lunar New year and I always like to celebrate by enjoying Chinese food, so we took a short road trip to the south side of Oklahoma City to try out the huge Hibachi Supreme Buffet.

Even though the parking lot was full, the restaurant wasn’t too packed. We were seated quickly and started in on that buffet. They had some things that were different but they mostly had the same stuff you find at most Chinese buffets- the sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, shrimp prepared in different ways, and sushi. I had a bit of everything on this trip but my favorite was their seafood lasagna. This is a cheesy casserole type dish with different types of seafood such as shrimp and crab. I also loved their tempura fried vegetables and their tempura sushi.

Overall I liked their food but I’m only giving them 4 strips of bacon. Why? To be honest, the building was in poor shape. The carpet is coming up and filthy, the tables and chairs could have used some love as well. So the condition of the restaurant itself brought down the enjoyment of the food.

Food Friday: Hunan Wok

Bre's Sept 2015 417

I have been eating at Hunan Wok for about twenty years.  My first visit was a lunch date with my soon-to-be husband back in the fall of 1995.  At that time there were two locations, one in Memorial Square at Penn & Memorial (the old shopping center where the AMC theater was), the second was in the Rockwell Plaza on the southwest corner of Rockwell and NW Expressway.  Since we both worked near Memorial Road, we met at that location.  While I had never eaten Chinese buffet, my husband had been going there for years.  After that first visit, it quickly became one of my favorite places to eat.  We usually only visited the Memorial Road location until we bought a house near NW Expressway, then we visited that one more.  The staff had gotten used to seeing us all the time.

The location in Memorial Square closed back in the early 2000’s but the Rockwell Plaza location had moved to its own building east of Rockwell on NW Expressway in 1997.  So we are very familiar with this restaurant.  Service is always good and most of the time the food is excellent.

Best thing on the menu is General Tso’s chicken.  I absolutely love the way they cook this, always nice and gooey.  The fried rice and sweet and sour chicken also rank high with me.  Fried shrimp is ok, could be better but the Crab Rangoon is great.  Now they do have things on the menu like crawfish that I just won’t eat, but remember it’s a buffet so you have plenty of choices.  They also have a Mongolian Barbeque, I’ve never tried it so I don’t know anything about it.  The sushi has a lot to be desired (plus need to list the ingredients).  One of my personal favorites for desert is the Chinese cheesecake, a little bite sized cheesecake in a wonton wrapper.  These are just wonderful, much different taste than any cheesecake I’ve tried before.  Like I said earlier, most of the time the food is good but I have been there on off nights, when some selections just aren’t as fresh.  Also there was a change in ownership around 2010 and some items disappeared which has disappointed me.

This is one of my favorite places for Chinese buffet in Oklahoma City.   I give it five strips of bacon and you might even see me there some night.

Address: 6812 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City.  Just east of the Rockwell on the south side of the road, building sits back from the highway between the Rockwell Northwest shopping center (not sure why it’s called that, sits on the southeast corner) and Slick Willie’s.
