Food Friday: Granny’s Kitchen

I’ve heard the hype about Granny’s Kitchen for a few years. I’ve heard how popular the Stillwater location has been and I have seen the crowds at their second location on Memorial at Penn. Never had the chance to try them out, until recently with the opening of a fourth location on NW Expressway.

Just a few days after they opened, we decided to stop in. The restaurant was busy but there were a few seats. We placed our order quickly, I went with the Oklahoma Omelet with hashbrowns and pancakes. Big K went all out and got the Nasty Granny. We really didn’t wait too long before the food came out. Wow, was it a lot of food. I knew the Nasty Granny was big but it took up the whole large plate. If you aren’t familiar with the Nasty Granny, it’s a huge chicken fried steak served over a halved biscuit with tater tots, bacon bits, ham pieces, crumbled sausage, onions, bell peppers, and cheddar cheese with cream gravy over all of it. No way I could have tackled this dish but it was perfect for Big K. He loved every bite. I did try a small bite, loved the chicken fry, was lighter than I expected. My Oklahoma Omelet was almost too much for me as well. This three-egg omelet was stuffed with beef, ham, sausage, and bacon with Monterey Jack cheese mixed in as well. It was so good, the egg brought the flavor of the meats together. It’s my new favorite omelet. The hashbrowns were good as well, they were just standard shredded potatoes fried to a golden brown. As much as I loved the omelet, the pancakes were amazing. The were so light and tasted just like the fair (if you know, you know). I really want to try more of the pancakes as well.

Just based on one visit I am totally impressed with Granny’s Kitchen. The service was great as well, no issues at any point. I’m actually ready to go back again, soon. I give them 5 strips of bacon, with a pancake of course.

Food Friday: Sunnyside Diner

There are getting to be quite a few good places to enjoy breakfast in the Oklahoma City metro and one that has several locations around town is the Sunnyside Diner. Now they have been around for several years. The first time I visited was years ago at their location downtown. Since then they have expanded to 4 more locations. 

I have known for years you will wait to get in so it has limited my visits, I just don’t have that kind of patience. But on a recent cloudy Saturday afternoon, we decided to have a late breakfast. Now even at 12:30p the place was still packed but we got lucky, there was a table for 2 still open. We ordered quickly, a cinnamon roll to share, with Big K getting a Cajun breakfast platter and I got a mushroom feta bacon omelet with a side of hash browns. Now here’s where I will be a bit critical, I know they were busy but it shouldn’t have taken almost 30 minutes for us to get our food. We weren’t in a hurry so we didn’t make a big deal of it. The cinnamon roll came out first, as we asked, and wow was it good. Sitting in a warm pool of icing, this was an excellent treat for us to try. The cinnamon wasn’t overpowering and the icing had more of a buttery vanilla taste than buttercream. We had just finished it when the main course came out. I really enjoyed the omelet, stuffed with mushrooms, spinach, and bacon topped with feta. It was cooked perfectly and had an interesting mix of flavors. The hash browns were also good, a large serving browned just right. Big K loved the mix of Cajun flavors in his platter, which had potatoes, eggs, and chicken along with veggies.

Their menu does have plenty of other options such as burgers and salads. They also have a bar, to help you get through the day if needed. There are 5 locations around the metro, I have visited two of them- downtown and north MacArthur. Both have been busy with every visit and usually the food comes out quicker. The server was incredibly nice and kept us updated on what was going on, so hopefully this was a one time problem. I will still give them 5 strips of bacon for consistency.

Food Friday: MentaliTea and Coffee

Update: They have moved to a new address. They are now in a new building along with The Produce Gal. Still a quiet place to write, read, or relax. They do have a larger menu, not just for drinks for food and baked goods. The Produce Gal also runs a small market with local products and produce. I had a frappe latte with lavender which was really good. I also loved my bagel sandwich with egg, cheese, and bacon. So check them out, still good food and great service, just a new location.

I often write in my office at home but sometimes I need someplace quieter with no distractions. I have found a great place to get some coffee, breakfast, and some quiet, MentaliTea and Coffee in Bethany.

On NW 36th Street just to the east of Southern Plaza retirement center, this small building looks industrial but inside is a quiet inviting space. I ordered one of their signature drinks, a lavender latte with a breakfast biscuit that had bacon added. I took a seat in a cozy nook near a window, with a comfy seat and a table to work from, I could look out the window when writers block struck. My latte came out in a cute white mug, with a latte art flower on top. I let it cool while I waited for the biscuit, which soon followed. The biscuit was huge, covered the small plate. It was homemade, buttery and flaky, the bacon added a bit of smoky flavor to it. The latte was smooth, the lavender just added a smoothness to the drink. Even though some people came in, the vibe stayed calm. I stayed for almost 2 hours, just thinking, writing, and enjoying my food.

This will be a new go-to place for me when I need to clear my mind. I will give them 5 strips of bacon, and some peace and quiet.
