Food Friday: Angelo’s Italian Deli

There has been so much talk about the new Italian deli opened in Bethany a few months ago, so you know I had to go try it out. We picked a nice Saturday afternoon and stopped in.

It was quiet when we got there and greeted enthusiastically by the owner along with several employees. The menu board on the wall was quite simple, so we picked out respective sandwiches. I ordered the toasted College & 36th, a sandwich stuffed with baked ham, Cooper white cheese, caramelized onion jam, Romaine, roasted tomato, all on a rosemary loaf. Big K got the cold sandwich called the Abruzzi. This sandwich is huge, with crispy chicken, Prosciutto, Ricotta cheese, mozzarella, arugula, roasted bell peppers with a balsamic glaze on a roll. While the owner was making up the sandwiches, we checked out the other offerings. They had plenty of sides, but we decided on the pasta salad and potato salad. We got everything to go, so we could just relax and eat at home. We dove into the sides first, the pasta salad was amazing. Large cheese filled ravioli with spices and parmesan cheese in what seemed to be an olive oil. Then we had the potato salad, which was also good. Large chunks of skin-on red potatoes in a creamy mayo-type sauce. Then we got to our sandwiches. The Abruzzi that Big K ordered was stuffed full of meats. I had a small bite, this will be what I get on my next visit. The chicken with the Prosciutto worked so well with the Ricotta and mozzarella providing some color to the flavors. My College and 36th was great as well. The ham and cheese worked so well with the caramelized onion, so good together.

Angelo’s Italian Deli is new to the city. Opened just a few months ago and have been quite popular ever since. They do also have an actual deli inside where you can order meats and cheeses by the pound. Coffee and tea are on the menu for drinks if you want to try that as well. There is also a dessert case with all kinds of treats, I just didn’t get anything this trip but will next time. Located on NW 36th just south of Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, they are easy to find. I loved every bite of my food and am excited to stop in again. I’m giving them 5 strips of bacon.

Food Friday: Birrieria Diaz

If you are looking for some really good Mexican food in Bethany, head to downtown Bethany across from SNU and check out Brirrieria Diaz. I have heard of it for quite some time and a few months ago was our first visit. We’ve been back several times because it is so good.

It’s located on the east corner of the downtown area, just a small restaurant. You can park on NW 39th or drive around back to the larger parking lot. Once inside, we are always seated quickly. Fresh corn tortilla chips along with really good queso and salsa are brought to the table. The salsa is fresh and not to spicy, the queso is creamy with a touch of sharp flavor. I have gotten the beef enchilada dinner a couple of times and it has been great. Always cooked to perfection, the ground beef has a nice flavor. But my new favorite is the tacos diaz, 3 flour tortillas filled with steak, ham, bacon, onions, peppers, and mozzarella cheese. These are wonderful, the different flavors just compliment each other. The meat is grilled and is tender, the veggies are also grilled and liven up the taco. It’s served with rice and beans. The rice is good but I really like their beans, I have tasted bits of bacon in them which I love.

I highly recommend trying them out, they have a breakfast menu that I need to try soon. I give them 5 strips of bacon.

Food Friday: Not Cho Cheesecake

I love cheesecake. Not going to lie, one of my favorite desserts. It is hard to find a decent cheesecake though, most are just ok (even though my daughter makes a really good mint chocolate cheesecake). I have been hearing about Not Cho Cheesecake for a while and on a beautiful Friday night, I decided to stop and try it. Everything I had heard was right, this place is good.

We got some personal cheesecakes to go, I got the Tennessee Whiskey and Big K got the chocolate chip cookie dough. We tried them after we got home and WOW!! So much flavor!! Mine had a graham cracker crust that was perfect. Gave the cheesecake a crunch that I had never had before. Then the cheesecake itself was so creamy, the cheese flavor really popped. Then the homemade caramel sauce on top was just the best. The owner could bottle it and sell it for topping or just spoon straight from the jar. As for the chocolate chip cookie dough that Big K had, after only a couple bites he looked at me and said, “if I die while eating this, put it in the coffin with me. I’m taking it with me.” He thought it was rich and decadent.

This small cheesecake bakery has only been around since 2020. The co-owner passed away not long after the opening and now her husband runs the cafe in her honor. He was the one running the register when we stopped in. He was so nice and friendly. He obviously takes pride of the product he delivers. He has a large variety of cheesecakes from plain to fancy. If you need dessert and want a good cheesecake, stop and see what he has in the case. I guarantee you’ll find something you love. A definite 5 strips of bacon.

Food Friday: Route 66 Donuts

There are donut shops all over the OKC metro, one of my favorites is Route 66 Donuts, between Council Road and Lake Overholser. Located at the end of a small strip mall right on Route 66, it’s quick and easy to get in and out.

I’m not lying when I tell you that they have the best apple fritters in the Oklahoma City metro, I have never had an apple fritter with so much apple. Has to be at least half an apple in each one. Not too much cinnamon or glaze, these are seriously the best fritters in town. I also love their donuts, just regular light fluffy donuts with different toppings. The chocolate and maple are always favorites. And not to leave out their sausage rolls. The small ones are breakfast sausage sized with dough wrapped around them. The larger ones are sausage patties with cheese and the dough wrapped around it all. I like both but feel there is just too much dough for my liking in a breakfast food.

Service is always great and the employees are always friendly. I recommend stopping by and trying those apple fritters. I will give them 5 strips of bacon.

Food Friday: Aloha Shave Ice and Coffee Shoppe

Aloha sign

For a few years now I had driven past the cute little blue and yellow building on the southwest corner of NW 39th Expressway and Council Road.  If you went by there during the summer, you couldn’t help but notice all the cars in the parking lot and families eating shaved ice.  It took me a while to finally work up the nerve to stop, I picked a nice hot day this past summer and we got to enjoy some of the best shaved ice I’ve ever eaten.

They have over 50 single flavors and at least that many custom mixes.  But the real treat is to have the shaved ice made “Hawaiian Style”, this is where they add cream to the shaved ice.  All is served in a flower shaped cup, with the ice in a huge mound on top.  We were totally addicted to them after the first visit and now go back as often as possible, trying different flavors every time.

In late August, they were closed for a few weeks to move into a new permanent building at the same location.  And with that move they have introduced not only coffee but real breakfast and lunch options.  It is a nice building with a cozy interior and much better parking.  They don’t have a big menu for the food but they do serve breakfast all day, which is a big plus for me.  A few weeks ago I tried the breakfast sandwich; egg, with your choice of cheese and meats on a warm croissant.   Truthfully, it was the best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had from a restaurant.  Mae had her favorite, mac and cheese, served extra cheesy so she gave it her approval.

As good as the food is the main reason to go is the shaved ice, and spend the extra money to get it “Hawaiian Style”.  I give Aloha five strips of bacon.
