Food Friday: Billy Sims Barbeque

I am a lover of good barbeque. Some brisket, pulled pork, sausage, or hot links, don’t care, I like it all. As strange as this comment might seem, it is hard to find in Oklahoma City. Yeah, we have lots of burger places but really only a few barbeque joints. Billy Sims Barbeque has been around for a while. I stopped once and wasn’t impressed but was in the mood, so I thought I would give them another try.

On a quiet Saturday night, we stopped in for dinner. The place was empty, so it didn’t take long to order or get the food. I just went with a sliced brisket dinner with loaded potato salad and mac and cheese. The brisket was good, not overly flavorful though. I did need the hickory barbeque sauce to liven it up. The Loaded potato salad was excellent, tangy with bacon bits. The mac and cheese was edible. Not my favorite but not as horrible as a frozen diet lunch I had a few weeks ago. I absolutely hated their bread, it could have been buttered on both sides when they toasted it, too dry. Big K got a combo dinner with sliced brisket and hot links with the same sides as well. He liked the brisket, thought the hot links were good but not too spicy.

Billy Sims is a football legend in Oklahoma. He was a running back for the University of Oklahoma from 1975-79, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1978. He went on to play with the Detroit Lions for a few seasons before retiring after an injury. In 2004, he opened with the first location in Tulsa. Since then the franchise has spread to six states. I will give them 4 strips of bacon. It wasn’t horrible but could be so much better. There are 22 locations in Oklahoma, with 12 more in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Food Friday: Savoy 1902

On a recent trip to Chickasha, we found a couple good places to eat. Savoy 1902 is in historic downtown Chickasha, close to the famous Leg Lamp.

We noticed how busy downtown Chickasha was on a Saturday night and picked Savoy 1902 to try, mostly because the building is historic and they have leg lamp lightshades outside. We got a seat quickly and looked the menu over. They serve not only barbeque but sandwiches as well. Since we had a big lunch, we went smaller for dinner. We started with the brisket deviled eggs. They came out quickly and we took them down just as fast. Loved every bite. I never used to be a deviled egg fan until I was pregnant, now I eat them every chance I get and these were perfect. The brisket on top gave it a bit of a different taste profile that I really enjoyed. For our entrees’ I got a barbeque brisket sandwich with a side of onion rings. The brisket was chopped into small squares, which was unusual but I liked the flavor of the brisket. The onion rings were the big shows, I loved them. Crisp with a great flavor, I could eat a big basket of them just by themselves. Big K ordered the jalapeno popper bacon grilled cheese sandwich. It looked so good that other people in the restaurant were asking him what he had gotten. He loved every bite, said it had a lot of flavor and the jalapeno poppers weren’t too spicy.

We really loved the atmosphere and the food. Now for the history of the building. The building really was built in 1902. It is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Chickasha Historic Downtown District. It seems to have been a hotel at some point in it’s history but has been abandoned for quite a while. The restaurant itself seems to be about a year old. The east end of the Chickasha Main Street area seems to be the heart of the entertainment district with lots of restaurants around. Also the famous leg lamp is there, it attracts a lot of tourists. I’ll give them 5 strips of bacon.

Food Friday: Texlahoma BBQ

Every year on my fathers birthday I try to have some barbeque in his honor. This year I wanted to try Texlahoma Barbeque in Edmond, it was really worth the fight with Edmond traffic.

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon when we stopped at their newest location on East Second Street, we had the place almost to ourselves. I follow them on social media and knew they had bacon burnt ends. Now just regular burnt ends are a treat, but everyone should know how I feel about bacon. You can order either a quarter or half pound, so I went with the half pound. I also got a dinner with sliced brisket and jalapeno cheese sausage with fried okra and mac and cheese on the side. Big K for the bbq nachos with pulled pork for something different. Our order came out quickly and we started on those bacon burnt ends immediately. So good!!! Just as you would expect, juicy and moist, with lots of caramelized bacon fat in between the meat. I could have eaten the whole thing without any help. The brisket was great as well, very juicy and could cut it with a fork. I absolutely loved the jalapeno cheese sausage, such a great flavor, not too spicy, more cheesy. The sides were good as well, mac and cheese was cooked perfectly, noodles not too soft and plenty of cheese. The okra was fried nice and crisp. Big K’s nachos were also good, the chips were thicker to hold the meat, the pulled pork was juicy and mixed well with the queso. Overall he loved them.

This was truly a great visit to Texlahoma, I’m ready to go back again. Those bacon burnt ends are worth it, I do need to note that they are only available Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So get up there on the weekend and try them out. 5 pieces of bacon burnt ends.

Food Friday: The Butcher BBQ Stand

A few weeks ago we had a nice weekend, so we went east on old Route 66. After a quick drive through Wellston, we found The Butcher BBQ Stand where 66B joins Route 66 on the east side of town. I had read about them online and knew if you weren’t in line early, you might not get any food. It was already after noon but we decided to stop anyway.

There was no line outside, so I thought that was a good sign until we got inside and saw the line that went around the dining area. Since we had come that far we decided to stay and see how long it would take. Now to be honest, the line did move pretty well but it still took us 30 minutes before we got to the front to order. Fortunately, they still had quite a bit of food still available, Big K got the rednexican nachos and I got a 2-meat plate with sausage and burnt ends. Before we even got to a table, our dinner was ready. I was surprised by the amount of food on the plate, there was a lot. Not just the 2 meats but sides of potato salad and mac and cheese as well as a huge piece of Texas toast. I jumped right in with the sausage, it had a smoky flavor, quite good. Now the burnt ends were great, melted in my mouth. Perfect combination of fat and meat, and crisp but tender. These were true meat candy and I highly recommend them. The potato salad was good as well but the homemade mac and cheese really stood out. Spiral pasta in a rich cheese sauce that had a sharpness to it that gave it a bit of a kick. Now the rednexican nachos that Big K got were the same way, lots of food piled on a tray. He got his nachos piled high with pulled pork, with creamy queso and barbecue sauce over top. He thought they were some of the best nachos he had ever eaten. Very flavorful with the different combination of food.

So I will highly recommend a drive up old Route 66 to Wellston for The Butcher BBQ Stand. It’s even worth the wait to stand in line. This was easily the best barbeque I’ve had in Oklahoma in a while. The service was great, very friendly employees. I will give the 5 strips of bacon with some of those burnt ends.
