Food Friday: Brownie’s Hamburger Stand

Last weekend I decided to head up to Tulsa for the Darryl Starbird car show. Now the show itself was totally worth it, loved seeing so many wonderful custom autos in one place. After walking for 4 hours, it was time for dinner so about 5p we stopped at a little burger joint and we were not disappointed.

Brownie’s Hamburger Stand is in a small building on the west side of Harvard just south of E 21st St. We were lucky to get a parking spot but had to wait for a couple minutes for a table to come open. Once we were seated, we looked over the menu. They had been so busy that day and were sold out of some things, so we didn’t order the burgers we wanted to try so we chose differently. Big K went with a classic Theta burger and I tried the smothered onion burger with an extra slice of bacon, for sides we ordered cheese fries and onion rings. The onion rings actually came to the table first with the cheese fries not far behind. Now when we were waiting, I watched one of the chefs prepare the onion rings. He took a handful of fresh cut onions and tossed them in the breading mix, from there right into the fryer. I absolutely loved these onion rings, the breading was light and flavorful. They were addictive and before I realized it, the big basket was empty. The cheese fries were also really good, the fries were perfectly cooked and covered in melted cheese. These went quick as well. As we were finishing the fries, the burgers came out. The smothered onions with lots of melted cheese were perfect on this burger along with the bacon. The meat was juicy and the buns buttery. Big K liked his Theta burger, loved the way the barbeque sauce brought out the flavor of the meat.

They were so busy that they did actually shut down after we were seated, they had no place to put anyone and the kitchen was behind. But their service was great and the girls were friendly. Brownie’s has been in Tulsa since 1956, there are lots of mementos from their history around the restaurant. They have tables or if you want to go old school, there is counter seating as well. I will definitely be back whenever I’m in Tulsa. 5 strips of bacon along with some onion rings.

Food Friday: Mother Road Market

This is going to be a bit different but then again the Mother Road Market is different. The Mother Road Market is one of these newer food hall concepts of having lots of small restaurant owners come together to offer their food under one roof. Really it’s like a big food court, like the kind you would find at the mall. The upside is that there are only a few stores to shop at, plenty of seating, and you don’t have to walk too far. It’s also great if you have picky eaters or if everyone wants something different.

So the three of us walked into the building with a plan, everyone was to get whatever they wanted but different. We split up and each got our own stuff. I got some pimento and cheese wontons from Salt and Vinegar, Big K stopped at Curds and Whey for some loaded fries, and Mae wanted a pickle pizza from Zasa’s Pizza and Wings. After the first round, I got some sushi from Akira Sushi & Ramen that I shared with Big K, he got a Brazilian savory pastry puff from Doctor Kustom. Lastly we all shared a sampler platter from Da Yolk. I wanted to try more places but we were all stuffed. There is a burger place, ice cream, barbeque, tacos, chicken, bread, pastries, and a bar. Everything was good, and the service was great at each location. I really like this food court set up, gives the small businesses a chance to shine while not having to worry about so much overhead.

It’s called the Mother Road Market because it’s about a block south of the current alignment of historic Route 66 at the corner of Lewis and E. 11th St. The building started it’s life as Scrivner-Stevens Grocery distribution center built in 1939, the non-profit Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation remodeled the warehouse in 2016. They then reached out to small business owners to set up shop and officially opened in 2018. There is more than just food, plenty of small local shops to browse and a mini-golf course. There is seating inside and out, when we were there it was over 100, so we stayed inside. If you are in Tulsa, stop by and check out everything they have to offer.

Center of the Universe

So I like to visit silly places and tourist attractions. Some live up to the hype, some don’t. The Center of the Universe in Tulsa sounds silly and a waste of time but in reality, it was cool.

First up is to find parking near the attraction, looks like parking is free on weekends and at night. You can park near the Union Depot, in one of the parking garages or just on the street. You then walk up onto the bridge that goes over the railroad tracks. When you get to the brick circle you are there, no signs or anything to point it out. Just go and stand in the center of the brick circle and speak. Sounds like you’re in a tunnel or in a pipe with the echo. I was skeptical at first but it really is strange. Just stand there and start talking, you will hear yourself. You can still hear those outside the circle and they can hear you.

No one is really sure why this happens, the bridge was reconstructed in 1983 after a fire damaged the original bridge. It wasn’t designed to be an “acoustic anomaly” but for some reason it is. Many people have theories, nothing scientifically proven. On the south side of the circle is a statue called The Artificial Cloud by Robert Haozous, it was placed there in 1991. It just seems to help with the eeriness of the location. If you’re in Tulsa this is a good place for a short side trip. Also it’s free unless you have to pay to park. Shouldn’t take any longer than 15 minutes unless there’s a crowd.
