Food Friday: Boom Town Creamery

Every once in a while I like to have a sweet treat, Boom Town Creamery has become a favorite in Edmond. I had heard about their first location in the Uptown district of Oklahoma City but to be honest, I don’t get down there often. They started in 2021 on NW 23rd street to great fanfare and have been very popular. In summer of 2023, they moved to Edmond taking over the former Dolci Paradiso location on 5th Street.

This location is a bit closer to home, so much easier to access. I’ve stopped in several times and always have a great experience. Their ice cream is made in small batches with several flavors available. They can serve the ice cream in a come or cup, or if you are adventurous, a flight. They also have pints to take home. They do have several flavors, I have tried the chocolate tornado, cherry goat, cookies and cream, and cookie butter. They are all smooth and flavorful, you can’t take a bite without tasting the add-ins, which is a good thing when it comes to ice cream. What I have loved the best with every flavor is the consistency of the smoothness, it is more like a frozen custard than ice cream.

Service is great and there is seating outdoors, so you can enjoy the evening if you go at night. It is a bit small inside but it seems most people went outside or just left entirely. There is a park right across the street, so that is an option as well. I give them 5 strips of bacon.

Food Friday: The Ice Creamatory

Not going to lie to my readers, I am actually kind of a morbid, dark person. I absolutely love Halloween. Not too big on “horror” movies though, most are actually funny to me. So imagine how excited I was to find out there was a horror-Halloween themed ice cream shop in Norman, Oklahoma.

Located not far from campus, The Ice Creamatory has excellent ice cream even if you aren’t into spooky. The soft serve ice cream is blended with whatever you want in it, with a drizzle and a topping. They have a make your own option or try one of the mixes off the menu. On my visit, I tried the Stutsman Scare- Oreos and cookie dough, topped with brownie bites, sprinkles, and chocolate drizzle, all in chocolate ice cream. I felt like I fell into a chocolate heaven. It was so good. Because of how well they mix the ice cream and the add-ins, every bite has an interesting mix of flavors. Sometimes you get more Oreo, or cookie dough, and the toppings also helped bring out the chocolatiness of every bite.

Now this was my first visit and I hope to stop by more often. The decor is horror themed, they do have a 12 foot skeleton in the corner, skull lights, and horror movie posters all over the restaurant. The seating is all informal, more of a place to meet and have dessert with friends or family. It’s actually not far from where I lived as a student at OU in the early 1990’s, wish it had been there then, I would have walked over there every day. It’s a bit hard to find, their only signage is on the windows of the building. After you turn onto SE 12th, go past the CVS on the corner to the big business/apartment complex. It’s near the end of the complex. So get over any fears you may have of horror and check this place out. I give them 5 strips of bacon served in a coffin.

Food Friday: Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Stores

Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Stores are everywhere in Oklahoma. Hard to find
a town of any significant size that doesn’t have a Braum’s. They are a mainstay
of Oklahoma, even to the point there is a Braum’s meter that floats around
social media in the winter that predicts how bad a storm may be. I’ve had
Braum’s many times and enjoy their ice cream. It was time for me to tackle a
review of their food.

I used to love a good Braum’s burger, their beef and bacon had a great
flavor to them. Last one I had was a few years ago, the burger was dry, the
veggies old, and the bacon too crisp. It was awful and I hadn’t been back.
Until last weekend, I just felt it was time to give them another chance. I went
to a location close to me. Usually it’s packed but was quiet when we stopped. I
got a straight up double bacon cheeseburger with fries and Big K tried a
special sweet n spicy gouda burger. They were quick with the order and
everything was correct. The fries were good like I remembered, crinkle cut,
nice crisp outside with a soft middle. I was surprised by the burger, I almost
didn’t want to like it at first but they made a really good burger. Bun and
veggies were fresh, the cheese melted nicely. The burger patties were a nice
size and had that good flavor I remembered. The bacon was perfect, not too
crisp with a smoky flavor. I was pleasantly surprised. Big K liked his burger
as well, said it was fresh and flavorful without being too spicy.

To finish off our dinner we had to have dessert, so we tried one of their
new cookie sundaes. The triple chocolate almond cookie looked good, so I got
one for the two of us to share. The cookies are on the bottom, then some hot
fudge, with two big scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream, topped by more hot
fudge and whipped cream. It’s big enough to be a meal in itself, that’s why we
shared. I’ve never had an issue with Braum’s ice cream, it’s always good. This
sundae was great, the chocolate cookies mixed well with the mint of the ice
cream.

I’m going to get a bit personal with Braum’s, in the 1980’s, when my family
was falling apart, my paternal grandparents would visit us at my maternal
grandmothers’ home in Norman. Grandpa always took us to the Braum’s at Flood
Ave. and Gray St. We loved his visits and getting either an ice cream cone or
milkshake. Now that Braum’s is a gas station but every time I pass it I have
that happy memory of being with Grandpa and listening to his stories.

Now for a bit of history, the first Braum’s stores opened in the Oklahoma City metro.  The grand opening for a half dozen stores was June 3, 1968, with plenty of other locations to follow.  In 1975, the dairy herd was moved from Kansas to Tuttle, you can still drive between Tuttle and Minco to see the herd.

Overall, I was really impressed with this visit to Braum’s might have start
going back. I’ll give them 5 strips of bacon, as long as it’s their fresh
bacon.
