Guess what you get when your teenage daughter has to have blood taken? Ice Cream!!! Well she only got ice cream because the nurse used it to bribe her into not hitting any of us while they were taking blood and I just went with it. She did good (just a finger prick) and so we all got ice cream. Did I go to Braums, Sonic, or our favorite, Dairy Queen? Not this time, we made a trip to the newest location of Roxy’s Ice Cream.
We actually tried it last summer at their location in the Plaza district and liked it. But it was too far to drive, so we didn’t make a return visit. But about a month ago, we discovered that a new location had been opened in the new Oak Grove shopping center on the southwest corner of NW 122nd and MacArthur. I had been looking for a reason to visit and being a good girl while blood was drawn seemed like a perfect excuse.
I’ve been saying for years that Oklahoma City needed an ice cream shop. Go to Michigan, you can find these shops everywhere but we really never had anything like it here. Yeah we have the above mentioned chains but nothing truly local. I knew about the Roxy’s Ice Cream Truck- we had seen it around town. How could you miss it with pink “ice cream” dripping from the roof, it’s cute. The problem was I was never in the same place as it was, so I didn’t get to try their ice cream until their brick & mortar location opened in 2015. It was good, both me and Mae tried the mint chocolate chip while my husband went with the salted caramel. The mint chocolate chip was good, plenty of chocolate chips mixed in. We enjoyed our treat but it’s just too much trouble to tackle the Plaza district, so we didn’t go back. So I was excited to see that there was a new location closer to home. Once again my husband got salted caramel and I did as well. I can see why he keeps going back to that flavor, they did a real good job mixing the salt into the ice cream. I also got the cookies and crème, I know there were Oreo type cookies mixed in but I also believe there might be chocolate chip cookies in there as well. Might have to get it a few more times for “research”. Mae got her cookies and crème sandwiched in between two chocolate chip cookies. She loved it, guess it was worth getting blood taken after all. While we were there, we got my mother some cookies and crème in pint size for her 70th birthday. She enjoyed it, told me she ate the whole pint in one sitting.
Roxy’s Ice Cream Social started as a food truck in 2012 and opened their Plaza district location in 2015. On their website they claim the ice cream is Philadelphia style with no eggs. Don’t know what that means but hey it’s good. I give them five slices of bacon.
