Food Friday: Los Perez

Los Perez sign

UPDATE:  Closed as of November 1, 2017

Another new Mexican restaurant has opened in northwest Oklahoma City.  Yes I know, another Mexican place and not in a good location but it’s worth a try.

We stopped there a couple of weeks ago.  A busy Friday night, but the place wasn’t packed so we were seated quickly.  Service was good, chips and salsa came out quickly.  You can also order a white queso as well, it’s worth the extra charge.  I got the beef chimichangas with sour cream sauce, with double rice as a side.  Not bad, I’ve had better.  My husband had chicken enchiladas with beans and rice.  He enjoyed it.  And Mae, not being adventurous, had her cheese quesadilla.  At least she liked it.  Overall everything was good, including the service.

My only problem is the location, even though the address puts it on Hefner Road, it’s actually behind other businesses in a shopping complex.  So it is hard to find, maybe one of the reasons the building has been through so many occupants.  So I’m giving Los Perez 4 slices of bacon, mostly because there are other Mexican restaurants that are better and easier to find.

Address: 7011 W. Hefner Rd., Oklahoma City.

Food Friday: El Sombrero

El Sombrero

UPDATE: Closed as of May 2019.

A few weeks ago we were hungry for Mexican food but wanted something new, a place we hadn’t tried before.  While driving around, we found El Sombrero on N. May just south of NW 50th St.

Even though it was Friday night, it wasn’t busy so we were seated quickly.  Chips, queso, and salsa were brought out quickly while we looked over the menu.  My husband ordered beef chimichangas, while I went with the shrimp enchiladas and Mae with a kids quesadilla.  It wasn’t a long wait for dinner to arrive.  The chips and queso were good but not mind-blowing.  Now my shrimp enchiladas were good, the shrimp had been grilled before being rolled in the tortilla and smothered in sour cream sauce.  I like the rice and for once I was able to eat the refried beans (not a fan of beans in any form).  Had a bite of the beef chimichangas, not bad will have to have some next time I stop.  Mae had no complaints either, I even think I saw her take a bite of the beans.  After we were done, we tried their new desert- sopapilla with ice cream and chocolate syrup drizzled on top.  When you added the honey to the mix, it was wonderful.

Overall it was a great place to stop for dinner.  It’s located in the Mayfair Shopping Center on the east side of May, very south part of the complex.  It was clean and the service was good.  The staff was very friendly and on top of everything.  I’ve read that there are two other locations, I haven’t been to them so this review is only for the Mayfair location.  I’m giving them five strips of bacon.

Address: 4900 N. May Ave., Oklahoma City; 2624 W. Britton Rd., Oklahoma City; 2838 S I-35, Oklahoma City.
