Update Sept 1st, 2021:  Looks to be closed permanently.  They did have a food truck and catering but even that looks to be gone.

I love good barbecue but interestingly enough it’s really hard to find in Oklahoma.  I know there used to be several good places but they are long gone.  Burgers seem to be the big thing now in the metro area so when it comes to my attention that there is also a new barbecue place I make sure to go.  A couple months ago my husbands’ boss told him about Klemm’s Smoke Haus that just opened on South Broadway in Edmond.  So like normal, he went first to see if I would like it, then I went to visit him for lunch to try it.

In what had been a Taco Mayo, now painted black, is some of the best barbecue the Oklahoma City metro area has seen in a while.  I had just a traditional brisket sandwich but I was immediately blown away by just how good it was.  This was the best brisket I’ve had in a long time (even better than Corky’s in Memphis), it was so juicy and tender.  It was almost like meat candy, just a delicate balance between sweet and spicy.  Not joking, I was halfway into the sandwich when I remembered to try the barbecue sauce with it.  I just loved the flavor even without the sauce.  It does only come as a sandwich, hope someday they offer it as a meal alone but I’m ok with it just the way it is.  My side was macaroni and cheese, which was, using my daughter’s term, “extra cheesy”.  Seriously, penne pasta swimming in a pool of homemade cheese sauce.  And to top everything off, they have my favorite sliced dill pickles (Zoo pickles, as they’re called in our house.  I’ll save that for a different time).  My husband gets the Bratwich, brats on a bun with red cabbage apple slaw and homemade German mustard.  I tried a bite and it was good, he loves it, being the only thing he’s gotten after 3 visits.

On our next visit we did take picky Mae with us and she also declared the mac and cheese to be good (being a self-professed expert on mac and cheese).  I also tried their salted caramel brownie which was incredible.  First of all the brownie is the size of a small Fiat, so that’s obviously a plus but then that salted caramel poured over the top.  Only thing that would make it better is to be served with some homemade vanilla ice cream.  The restaurant is clean, they did a lot of remodeling to the building and it has a rustic feel.  The only thing that could match the food was the service- everyone was incredibly friendly and the food was delivered quickly.

This is a small family run business that started a few years ago with catering, then to a food truck, and now a full-fledged restaurant.  I highly recommend visiting and give them 5 strips of bacon.
